Non-linear Thermoelasticity, Irreversible Thermodynamics and Elastic Instability

چکیده

1. Introduction. In the linear range a general theory of thermoelasticity based on irreversible thermodynamics was developed and discussed extensively in some earlier work ([3], [4], [9]). It was assumed that the elastic solid is initially in a stress-free equilibrium state at uniform temperature. Completely linearized perturbations in the vicinity of this equilibrium state are then analyzed assuming the strains, the rotations, the displacements and temperature variations to be small of the first order. The case of similar first order perturbations for a solid in equilibrium at uniform temperature but in a state of initial stress was also analyzed in the context of the analogous case of a fluid saturated, porous medium

Thermoelastkity and Irreversible Thermodynamics

A unified treatment is presented of thermoelasticity by application and further developments of the methods of irreversible thermodynamics. The concept of generalized free energy introduced in a previous publication plays the role of a " thermoelastic potential " and is used along with a new definition of the dissipation function in terms of the time derivative of an entropy displacement. The g...

Linear Thermodynamics and the Mechanics of Solids

The Thermodynamics of linear irreversible processes is presented from a unified viewpoint. This provides a new and synthetic approach to the linear mechanics of deformation of solids, which includes as particular cases the classical theory of Elasticity, Thermoelasticity and Viscoelasticity. The first two sections constitute an introduction to the general concepts and principles of linear Therm...

Irreversible thermodynamics of curved lipid membranes.

The theory of irreversible thermodynamics for arbitrarily curved lipid membranes is presented here. The coupling between elastic bending and irreversible processes such as intramembrane lipid flow, intramembrane phase transitions, and protein binding and diffusion is studied. The forms of the entropy production for the irreversible processes are obtained, and the corresponding thermodynamic for...

NON-HOMOGENEITY IN RHEOLOGY Stability Problems of Inhomogeueous Viscoelastic Media

The phenomenon of buckling in compression of an elastic inhomogeneous medium under initial stress is well known. It is illustrated by the instability of a longitudinally compressed ‘elastic plate embedded in a medium of lower rigidity. Under a critical load buckling appears suddenly in the form of a sinusoidal folding of a certain wave-length. Such sudden buckling ,will, of course, not occur in...
